Ski the Lyngen Alps northern Norway

Skiing at 70º North, perfect fall-line towards the deep blue of one of the many impressive fjords in the Lyngen Alps, staying in a fantastic fishing cabin located on the dock of a small private harbour. An area far enough north that after the middle of May the sun never sets. An endless playground that is famous for late spring skiing with top snow conditions, peaks towering high above the shorelines of the fiords and the most perfect ski lines anywhere. SME has been skiing in the Lyngen Alps every May since 2016.

In May 2025, we will run one program in the Lyngen Alps, guided and hosted by the Beglingers. Our programs will be averaging between 1000-1400 vertical meters per day.

We start both programs in Tromsø, the capital of northern Norway, meeting all guests in a downtown hotel. Then we drive in a minibus to our “fishing cabin” in Lyngseidet.

Nicoline will make sure that we get to eat well, Durrand Glacier style with some Norwegian specialties. Healthy breakfast, delicious after skiing snacks and family style dinner followed by dessert. For the past many years, we have been lucky, a fishing boat anchored at the dock 4 meters beside our cabin entrance door. We have been able to buy fresh shrimp, I think this speaks for the upcoming dinner plans.

In our minibus it will be very easy to get around and experience some of the very best ski tours in the Lyngen Alps, 350 km to 400 km north of the Arctic Circle.

All ski-tours start at sea level. This means that we don’t have to fight higher altitudes. Therefore, climbing will be much easier. During this program you can expect ski-tours that range in between 1000 to 1400 vertical meters.

There are ski-tours that have more vertical, but that is not the daily routine of our program.

It is easy to understand why we got hooked on ski-touring in northern Norway. Simply amazing.

Expected vertical per day:

S.M.E. Classic Skiing Program:

• Skiing alpine slopes of average to steep incline and shorter slopes up to maximum 40º incline.
• Ski climbing with a daypack, 1000 to 1400 vertical meters each day.

Of course you are also welcome to take a rest day and enjoy the town of Lyngseidet

Ability level:

This program takes place in steep and rugged terrain, which has broken glaciers (crevasses), and other natural skiing challenges. Some of the ski-ascents and ski-descents lead through exposed and technically difficult terrain with steep incline, where safe and efficient ski-techniques and strong skiing skills are required.

For this program each guest has to meet the below listed skiing techniques.

• comfortably link 30 short radius turns in most snow conditions
• ski with a 10 lbs pack on your back
• safe and efficient skiing in complex and exposed alpine terrain
• comfortably perform kick-turns, side-slip and snow-plow in steep and exposed terrain.

Every ski guest on the tour should enjoy good health.

You have to be physically in good shape. We recommend that every ski guest on this program does enjoy active outdoor endurance sport on a regular basis; such as jogging, cycling, cross- country skiing or ski touring. It is important that you can efficiently ski-climb with a daypack of approximately 10 lbs.

For the quality of this program we like to give priority to ski guests who have skied with Selkirk Mountain Experience on earlier skiing programs.

Travel from North America to Tromsø, Norway

From North America fly via London (preferable) to Oslo, Norway, arriving in Oslo in AM.

From Oslo to Tromsø, best use a flight with SAS or Norwegan Air. There are several daily flights. After arriving from North America, you should have enough time to catch your flight with SAS or Norwegan Air.

You can also fly from North America to Tromsø with Star Alliance. Most of these flights go from North America via London to Oslo.

From the Tromsø airport take a taxi to the Comfort Hotel Xpress in downtown Tromsø. Approximately 10 minutes taxi drive.

For your return flight: we have you back at the airport in Tromso at about 9:00 a.m. so a 11:00 a.m. flight out of Tromsø is completely doable.

When should you arrive in Tromsø

All ski-tours start at sea level. Therefore altitude is less of an issue. Still, we recommend that you arrive a day or two early, in case your luggage might not make it in time. Over the past years we have seen it several times, that guests arrived in Tromsø without luggage. Tromsø is an amazing little city and it is fun to have a bit of time to explore the place.

Ruedi Beglinger will be your Mountain Guide. He has extensive experience in guiding expeditions, mountaineering and ski-mountaineering around the world, including running ski programs in northern Norway.

Ruedi has been certified as a Mountain Guide by the Swiss (SBV) and International Guide Association (I.F.M.G.A.) in 1977. He is an active and professional member of the Canadian Mountain Guide Association (ACMG) and the Canadian Avalanche Association (C.A.A.) Industrial Avalanche Level 3.

Nicoline Beglinger will be your cook and host.

Booking and Cancellation Policy

Booking your European tour with SME

• 1. Because of the nature of this specialty program, Selkirk Mountain Experience Ltd. requires a non-refundable deposit of Cdn $ 2000.- in order to confirm your booking. You will then receive a confirmation with details of the program.
• 2. A second payment of Cdn $ 2000.- will be due on December 15.
• 3. We ask that you pay final payment of Cdn $ 2450.- by February 1.

Cancelation Policy

Because of the nature of this program, Selkirk Mountain Experience is not able to make exceptions to the booking and cancelation policy.

We strongly recommend that you purchase trip cancellation insurance.
If you have difficulties in finding the right insurance, please contact our Revelstoke office or phone 250-837-2381 (weekdays 09:00 hrs to 12:00 hrs).

Selkirk Mountain Experience Ltd. reserves the right to cancel any program for whatever reason. In this situation Selkirk Mountain Experience Ltd. will refund all paid program money. However, Selkirk Mountain Experience Ltd. is not responsible for any further expenses incurred in preparation for the program (airfares, pre-paid hotels etc.)

RELEASE OF LIABILITY, WAIVER OF CLAIMS, ASSUMPTION OF RISKS AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT:

All guests who ski with Selkirk Mountain Experience Ltd. are asked to sign the form. This form will be presented to you at the start of the program, the place where we will meet. Questions can be directly addressed to the person who will present the waiver document. A copy of the waiver will be sent to you together with the confirmation package.
